It is unlikely that Pierre Corneille liked wearing wigs, even though, contrary to popular belief, he did not die in poverty. This was his final portrait as he died on the night of 30 September and 1 October 1684 at Rue d’Argenteuil in Paris, the city where he had settled in the winter of 1662. He had been born on 6 June 1606 in Rouen.
